About this class

This five day long workshop is aimed at beginner and intermediate sculpture students. It is designed to help you develop skills and knowledge around a specific aspects of stone carving.

The workshop will take place over a period of five days, from Monday to Friday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a fully equipped private studio in Antwerp, Belgium, under the guidance of Athar Jaber. From 31 October to 4 November 2022.

Spread over the course of 5 days (30 hours of instruction, 6 hours/day), the course will involve personal guidance, lectures, demonstrations, and group discussions. Thanks to the small-group format and individual teaching approach, this workshop is suited for participants of all background and levels of experience.

The workshop is designed to introduce participants to traditional techniques of stone carving (no power tools will be used). The main focus is placed on mastering the tools and techniques of stone carving through a series of specific exercises. The proposed exercises are at the end of this document and are specifically curated to suit the time and space of the workshop. They range from letter carving, figurative sculpture, ornamental sculpture, and architectural stone masonry. You are free to choose from one the proposed exercises and Athar Jaber will help you realize it in stone.

Results

The workshop is intended for students of all levels and results are subjected to your previous experience. At the end of the workshop, beginners will have gained the basic knowledge, confidence and insight to continue pursuing stone carving on their own. While intermediate and more advances participants will have the opportunity to hone their skills in a particular aspect of stone carving.

What's included

Plaster cast models

Various plaster casts are available to copy from. But you are more than welcome to bring your own ideas along so that we can help you realise them in stone.

Studio

The classes will take place in our fully equipped studio.

Stone Carving Tools

All the necessary stone carving tools and safety equipment will be available.

Personal tutoring

Athar Jaber will be available for 6 hrs/day for your of personal guidance.

What's not included

Stone

The stone is not included but will be provided at an additional fee (between 20 and 50 Euros depending on chosen excercise).

Stay

Students must arrange their own stay in Antwerp.

Transport

Transport to and from the studio.

Meals

Meals are not included, but we do have beverages such as coffee or tea.

Safety gear

Due to current COVID-19 restriction, it is advisable to bring your own safety equipment such as eye protection, ear protection, gloves and safety shoes.
